I recently did a poll and Natural Hair forum. I asked, “If you could consult with a professional about your top concerns with your hair, what would it be?” And overwhelmingly, most people wanted to know how to keep their hair moisturize.
This led me to put together this checklist of things you should be doing to maintain healthy moisturize hair.
I could not help but notice that most of the ladies that complained of dry brittle hair seem to have type 4 hair. Which is notorious for being dry brittle hair.
So let’s jump right into these five things to help keep your hair moisturize.
REGULAR DEEP CONDITIONING
Keyword REGULAR. This tip can make or break your moisture goals for your hair. Moisturizing conditioners done at least twice a month can help improve your hair’s elasticity, and contribute to the overall hair growth. Deep conditioning with extra nourishing ingredients and processing with heat will enhance the benefits.
Here are some really good recommendations:
2. CHECK THOSE INGREDIENTS
There are many products on the market with ingredients that contribute to making your hair dry and brittle. Knowing these ingredients to avoid can guide you on your merry way to luscious hair.
Stay away from:
•Consistent use of sulfates
•Parabens
•Mineral Oil
•Phthalates
•Isopropyl Alcohol
Ingredients that are great
(Make sure they are listed as the first ingredients)
•Aloe vera
•Glycerin
•Honey
•Natural Oils
3. THE LOC METHOD
The LOC method is an abbreviation for
Liquid/leaving
Oil
Cream
This popular method in the natural community has proven to work wonders in getting and retaining moisture. On Wash Day
(Oh how we love Wash Day ❤️), After shampooing and conditioning your hair, simply layer your products on in this order.
Some delightful recommendations:
4. HAIR STEAMING
There are some hair types (low porosity hair) that has a very stubborn cuticle layer, and requires steam to lift this layer of the hair to allow product to enter. Knowing your porosity will make a huge difference in the way you care for your hair. Check out our blog that's all about hair porosity
The deep conditioning works well, BUT steam is a step up to ensure your quality nourishing products work their best, and reach their destination. A win win situation!
5. Use a Satin Bonnet or Pillowcase
So, after you have done all that work to shampoo, deep condition/steam, and LOC Method to your hair, you wouldn’t want to dry your hair out at night lying on a cotton pillow case. They cost extra friction and absorb the moisture and oils right out of your hair in one nights rest. This can also cause breakage and splitting ends. So invest in the proper sleep cap.
Here are a few options that might help:
Try making the simple adjustments to your hair routine and you are sure to see a change in yours ability to receive abs maintain moisture.
