Bentonite Clay for Natural Hair

Bentonite clay may sound like another tall tale ingredient that health nuts and naturals are hyping up. But let me assure you, its not. Its a great all natural substance that you should be incorporated in to your self-care routine ASAP. I know you may be concerned about applying a mud to your hair, but the results will leave you mesmerized.

Curious? Continue on......

WHAT IS BENTONITE CLAY ANYWAY?

So, before we get into all the incredible benefits of bentonite clay, let's first talk about what bentonite clay is to begin with. Bentonite clay is an all natural healing mixture that derives from volcanic ash. YES, you heard me, volcanic ash. Its an absorbent aluminum phyllosilicate clay. which means it's capable of drawing out impurities and toxins. It possesses negative ions that act like magnets to pull impurities to the surface- bacteria, fungi, toxins, parasites, etc. These impurities have a positive charge, and we all know opposites attract. The impurities bind to the clay and get a one way ticket to the surface to be washed away.

So how is this good for my hair, you ask? Well, lets take a look.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS FOR HAIR?

To use bentonite clay as a mask, it must be combined with water, or apple cider vinegar. This forms a paste that has a negative charge. Once its blended and applied to your hair, it begins to draw the positively charged toxins to itself. This means its not only good for you hair, but great for your scalp and skin as well. Yep, you can apply this bad boy all over, from head to toes. Be careful not to scare the kiddos.

It also contains many minerals that are essential in healthy hair growth and scalp health, like sodium, potassium, and calcium. This stuff is heavenly and God sent!

BENEFITS

1. It gets rid of dandruff

Dandruff that forms from fungus thrives on the extra sebum your scalp produces. Bentonite clay absorbs the extra sebum and makes the scalp inhabitable for fungus, thus preventing dandruff from forming.

2. Helps hair grow

Bentonite clay removes dead skin cells from your scalp and cleanses hair follicles. This boost hair growth. Also, like mentioned before it contains sodium, potassium, and calcium, all aiding in the growth of hair.

3. Adds shine to your hair

Did I mention that after applying this mask you will experience amazing luster and shine?

4. Helps to elongate and define curls

Whether its from the structure of the clay or its ability to deep condition and moisture, bentonite clay helps to temporarily elongate and define curls.

HOW TO MAKE A BENTONITE CLAY MASK

- Mix about 1/2 cup of bentonite clay and natural oils (2 tablespoons) into a bowl. Make sure to use a plastic or wooden spoon and bowl.

-Add 6 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to the mixture. Make sure there are no clumps. Mix until a mud like consistency.

-Allow the mixture to sit for a few minutes before applying to wet freshly shampooed hair. Make sure your hair is wet to ensure even distribution of the mask.

- Allow mask to sit for 20 minutes, but don't let it dry completely, as it will be difficult to remove.

- Rinse out the mask with warm water. Be sure to completely rinse well. You can lather again with shampoo if you feel necessary.

- Follow with a deep conditioner. Mandatory, as you have just removed everything from your hair.

As you see, a bentonite clay mask can be that one thing your hair regimen could be missing. Remember too much of anything can be harmful. You don't want to detox your hair too often and remove beneficial oils that your hair needs to remain healthy.

Try this mask out on your next wash day and let me know what you think!
